On a cold New Year’s Eve we decided to load up the dogs and head towards Delta, Alabama where Cheaha State Park and the highest point in Alabama is located. The drive from Chattanooga was about 2.5 hours of mostly interstate until we got close to Cheaha State Park. The park is located in the Talladega National Forest/Cheaha Wilderness and is absolutely beautiful. The scenery is so unique with giant boulders and old trees that have been bent and warped by the wind into different shapes. Speaking of wind… if you’re thinking of camping here be sure to check the weather. We briefly thought about it, but I’m not sure our tent would have withstood the wind.
We drove straight to the top of Cheaha Mountain and didn’t do too much exploring around the park, but there is apparently a lot going on there… resort, restaurant, pool, campground, etc. Once we got to the top we hiked around a little and let the dogs roam. Everything was closed and there wasn’t another soul in sight – it was almost as though everyone else was smart enough to pay attention to the wind advisory! We did climb around on some of the giant boulders and got some fun pictures.

Overall this was a fun road trip and checking off another high point on the last day of the year felt really good. If we ever had the chance I’d love to go back on a warmer day and check out the whole park.
